Acne Treatment

Acne is a skin condition that affects the skin’s oil glands and hair follicles.

Acne is a skin condition that affects the skin’s oil glands and hair follicles. The pores in your skin connect to oil glands under the skin. These glands produce an oily substance called sebum. The pores connect to the glands by a canal called a follicle. Inside the follicles, oil carries dead skin cells to the surface of the skin. A thin hair also grows through the follicle and out to the skin. Sometimes, the hair, sebum, and skin cells clump together into a plug. The bacteria in the plug causes swelling which can turn into whiteheads, blackheads, or pimples.

Acne is common on the face, neck, back, chest, and shoulders. It is most common in teenagers, however it can affect people of all ages.

Acne is usually not a serious health threat, but it can be painful, particularly when it’s severe and may cause permanent physical scarring.

It can also cause emotional distress, affect a patient's self-esteem.

Types of Acne: Whiteheads are closed just under the surface of your skin, giving them a white appearance.

Blackheads open at the surface of your skin, allowing the sebum to oxidize giving them a black appearance.

While whiteheads and blackheads are the most common lesions seen in acne, other types can also occur. Inflammatory lesions, such as pimples, are more likely to cause scarring of your skin.
