IPL—Intense Pulsed Light—produces a broad spectrum of non-coherent light. A laser produces light at a specific wavelength. Both can be used for hair reduction, but they are not the same technology.

Why Does Wavelength Matter?

The 755 nm Alexandrite wavelength has strong interaction with melanin and can be an excellent option in appropriately selected lighter skin. The longer 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelength has lower absorption by epidermal melanin and is particularly important for appropriately selected higher-melanin skin types.

Does More Energy Mean Better Hair Removal?

No. Laser hair removal is not about turning a device up as high as possible. Energy, wavelength, pulse duration, spot size, cooling, hair characteristics and skin pigmentation all influence treatment. Effective treatment should also be appropriately individualized.

Can Darker Skin Have Laser Hair Removal?

Yes. Modern laser technology allows appropriately selected clients across a broad range of skin tones to be treated. The important considerations are wavelength, parameters, skin assessment, recent sun exposure and provider experience.

Can I Have Laser Hair Removal with a Tan?

Recent tanning can increase melanin in the surrounding skin and change treatment considerations. Always tell your provider about recent sun exposure, vacations and self-tanning products. Treatment may need to be adjusted or postponed depending on the circumstances.

What Hair Colours Respond Best?

Dark brown and black hairs generally provide the strongest melanin targets. White and grey hairs contain little or no melanin and are usually poor targets for conventional hair-removal lasers. Very blonde and some red hair can also be challenging.

Why Are Multiple Treatments Needed?

Even sophisticated laser technology cannot make every follicle enter active growth at the same time. Treatments are repeated as additional hairs cycle into a treatable stage. Appropriate timing is biology, not simply a package structure.
