Why Fall Is the Best Time to Start Laser Hair Removal

Why Fall and Winter Make Laser Hair Removal Easier

Laser hair removal works by delivering light energy that interacts with melanin associated with the hair. Because melanin is also present in the skin—and increases with tanning—recent UV exposure can change treatment considerations. Fall and winter generally make it easier to limit tanning, protect treated areas from the sun and keep areas such as the legs, bikini line, back and underarms covered.

Starting in fall also gives you time. Hair follicles are not synchronized, so a complete series must be spaced over months. Beginning in October means you can work with biology instead of trying to rush a series just before summer.

Why Do I Need Multiple Treatments?

Hair follicles cycle through different stages. Laser is most effective when an appropriately pigmented hair is connected to the structures being targeted during an active growth stage. At any appointment, only a percentage of follicles will be in that ideal stage.

Treatments are repeated as additional follicles cycle into active growth. Over a properly timed series, clients commonly notice progressively less visible hair, slower apparent regrowth and changes in the density or texture of remaining hair.

What Kind of Laser Does New Light Use?

At New Light Laser & Aesthetics, we use the Cynosure Elite iQ, a true dual-wavelength laser platform offering 755 nm Alexandrite and 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelengths.

The 755 nm Alexandrite wavelength has strong interaction with melanin and is commonly used for appropriately selected lighter skin types. The longer 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelength has lower absorption by epidermal melanin, making it an important option for appropriately selected higher-melanin skin types.

Having sophisticated technology is only one part of a good laser treatment. Skin assessment, wavelength selection, treatment parameters, recent sun exposure, hair characteristics and provider experience all matter.

Your Skin Tone Shouldn't Be a Guess

Before treatment, we need to understand the skin we are treating. Fitzpatrick skin typing provides useful information about how skin responds to UV exposure, but visual assessment alone does not always tell the complete story.

Our Elite iQ incorporates the Skintel Melanin Reader, which provides an objective measurement of melanin in the skin. We combine that information with your consultation, Fitzpatrick type, recent sun exposure, hair characteristics, medications, treatment history and professional assessment. Technology gives us information; training tells us how to use it.

Is IPL the Same as Laser Hair Removal?

No. IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light and uses a broad spectrum of light. A true laser produces light at a specific wavelength. IPL can legitimately be used for hair reduction, but IPL and laser are different technologies. Consumers should know which technology they are receiving and why it has been selected for them.

What Does Laser Hair Removal Feel Like?

Sensation varies by person, treatment area, hair density and settings. Many clients describe a quick sensation of heat or a snapping feeling. Temporary redness or swelling around follicles can occur, but laser hair removal generally involves little to no social downtime for most clients.

Should I Shave or Grow the Hair Before Treatment?

In most cases, the treatment area should be shaved according to your provider's instructions. Shaving removes hair above the skin while leaving the follicular target below the surface. Waxing, sugaring, tweezing and epilating remove hair from the root and are generally avoided during a laser series unless your provider advises otherwise.

Why Does It Look like My Hair Is Growing After Laser?

Treated hairs do not necessarily disappear immediately. During the days after treatment, hairs may work their way outward and shed. Meanwhile, follicles that were not in the appropriate growth stage during the previous appointment may later produce visible hair. This is why apparent regrowth does not necessarily mean the treatment failed.

Can All Hair Colours Be Treated?

Laser hair removal relies heavily on pigment within the hair. Dark brown and black hairs typically provide stronger melanin targets. Grey and white hairs contain little or no melanin and are poor candidates for conventional laser hair removal. Very blonde and some red hairs can also be difficult to treat effectively.

Can Darker Skin Have Laser Hair Removal?

Yes. Appropriately selected clients across a broad range of skin tones can be treated. This is precisely where technology, wavelength selection, skin assessment, settings and provider experience become especially important. Higher epidermal melanin can compete for laser energy, so treatment must be individualized.

Can Men Have Laser Hair Removal?

Absolutely. Common areas include the back, shoulders, chest, abdomen, neck and beard line. Some men want substantial reduction; others simply want less density, easier grooming or help with shaving-related irritation and ingrown hairs.

Is Laser Hair Removal Permanent?

The most responsible expectation is long-term hair reduction. Results vary by person and treatment area, and hormonal changes can stimulate new hair growth later in life. Some clients may choose occasional maintenance treatments.

What Should I Ask Before Choosing a Laser Hair Removal Clinic?

Ask what device is being used, whether it is laser or IPL, which wavelength is planned for your skin, how your skin is assessed, how recent tanning affects treatment and what results are realistic for your hair colour and treatment area.

You are not simply purchasing a package of appointments. You are investing in technology, assessment, provider knowledge, treatment planning and follow-up.

Start Before You Think You Need To

If you want to spend less time shaving next summer, don’t wait until next summer to begin. Starting in fall gives your treatment plan time to work with your natural hair-growth cycles.

Before choosing a clinic, ask what device is being used, whether it is actually a laser, which wavelength is appropriate for your skin, how your skin will be assessed and how experienced the provider is with your skin tone. Those questions tell you much more than the price of a package.

Conclusion: Start in Sweater Season. Thank Yourself in Short-Sleeve Season.

If you want to spend less time managing unwanted hair next summer, fall gives your treatment plan time to work with your natural hair-growth cycles. It also makes sun avoidance and protection easier for many treatment areas.

At New Light Laser & Aesthetics, our Elite iQ gives us two true laser wavelengths, while Skintel provides an objective way to assess melanin as part of individualized treatment planning. Know the skin. Choose the technology. Treat accordingly.
